This page describes an AU of The Sages inspired by the game Doki Doki Literature Club↗. This AU is created in a way that it could happen in-canon, but it isn't necessarily canon. Like an optional sidequest.
What if you wanted to romance one of the sages, but I said: "no. angst time."

Setting
The story follows Sage as she finds herself joining a highschool literature club along with three new friends (and one old one). Similar to the game, just about all of the story takes place in one generic classroom. There are some scenes in act one where Sage goes to Grey, Red, and Yellow's house, for festival prep. I have no idea what those would be like yet.
The actual situation of the AU is that Blue has taken over, altering the others' memories and perceptions to recreate their favorite psychological horror dating sim, all from within Sage's brain. How? Don't worry about it.
Characters
Here's a brief summary of each of The Sages' highschool versions.
Sage
Sage takes the place of the "main character" player insert. She only joins the literature club for the food and friends, and because she can't say no to Grey. She can't even read.
Grey
Grey takes the role of Sayori↗, making her Sage's childhood best friend. Grey is vice-president of the literature club (mainly because she refused to be president, not confident enough). She's the main poetry lover of the club, and particularly loves bittersweet, tragic romance stuff.
Grey is fully aware that this is a false situation and does her best to play along to keep Blue happy. She's powerful enough to not get her mind altered, but as the end of Act 1 proves, not powerful enough to avoid getting killed off and shut out.
Red
Red functions similarly to Natsuki in Act 1, and Yuri in Act 2. Red is sporty and rebelious, with her only interested in literature being slam poetry "stick it to the man" type stuff. She's really more here to hang out without getting in trouble for loitering.
Initially, Red fits perfectly into the tsundere archetype. Maybe a little too well, because she genuinely has no romantic interest in Sage. Attempting to romance Red just ends up with them being friends, and eventually Red admits to her crush on Blue. For Act 2, Blue tries uping Red's interest at Sage and removing the crush, and succeeds in making Red a yandere. Red spends Act 2 being wildly possessive over Sage and highly aggressive.
Yellow
Yellow functions similarly to Yuri in Act 1, and Natsuki in Act 2. Yellow is your classic book nerd, more interested in novels and nonfiction than poetry. She definitely used to be part of the debate club, but quit because she couldn't stand all the politics.
Yellow would make a perfect shy bookish girl, except for the fact that she's not shy at all. She's confident and talkative and pretty content with herself. She also has no romantic interest in Sage during Act 1, but can be befriended. For Act 2, Blue tries making lots of changes to Yellow, including making her into Sage enough to fight with Red, but it just makes Yellow more suspicious of the situation. She spends this act going full conspiracy mode trying to figure out why everthing feels off.
Blue
Blue takes the role of Monika↗, but is more similar to Sayori in ditzy personality. They've taken over as president of th e literature club, despite having seemingly no interest in literature. They mention previously being part of the anime club!
Blue is the "mastermind" behind the situation, but they're really only doing it to spend time with their friends. Even if that includes manipulating their friends' memories and personalities to more properly fit the senario :] Honestly, Blue's motivations here are more comparable to Flowey from Undertale than Monika. They aren't "in love" with Sage, there's no big epiphany, they just want someone to play with them!
Plot Outline
Act 1
The first attempt. For the most part, this section is a perfectly normal anime highschool au of The Sages.
Sage essentially "wakes up" walking to school with Grey, and quickly accepts the just a normal student story. Grey pressures Sage into coming to check it out because she promised she'd bring a new member and the others brought snacks and everything :( And then Sage sells her soul for a muffin or whatever. Normal poetry and club shenanigans ensue. Grey slowly plays along less, getting more and more concerned for Sage, who keeps getting headaches for some reason. Blue and Grey have a Talk, just in time for the festival prep weekend! Choice between baking with Yellow or doing arts and crafts with Red. Sage also has a meet up with Grey at her request, where she almost snaps Sage out of it, but cuts herself off. She still says enough to upset Blue though! Grey "kills herself", Sage freaks out, and Blue decides to just start over.
Act 2
Now with no Grey.
Everyone's memories of Act 1 are wiped and it starts again. Other than brief ominous flashes, Grey is gone, making Yellow the vice president this time. Blue approaches Sage after her class and invites her to the club, where she barely agrees to stay. From there out, Red takes over all interactions. Red and Yellow still fight, much more aggressively this time, including Red making some big threats. Instead of getting the Natsuki treatment of getting completely sidelined, though, Yellow starts picking up on the weirdness of the situation and makes some attempts to confer with Sage about it, which Blue shuts down. Before the festival prep weekend, Blue makes one last attempt to get Sage to hang with her, and Red kicks her out. Yellow has, at this point, basically figured it out, but when she tries to talk to Sage, Red takes it as her taking Sage away. Red kills Yellow, then herself in violent confusion. Sage gets stuck in the classroom with the bodies all weekend, until Blue shows back up and starts things over again.
Act 3
Just Blue.
There's no Act 4 or anything after the "Just Monika" section, they go back to normal. Sorry, no Grey as president.
