The main character of this story, with the scenes from her time alive marked with a lower case omega symbol: ω. Sage is a half-human half-dragon creature who is best friends with the human Seth.

Profile

Appearance

Sage is a humanoid with tan skin and light brown hair. As she gets older, her hair gets longer, though she always keeps her spikey, side-swept bangs. Her skin has patches of green scales, notably on under her eyes and along her back. As part of her dragon genetics, she has green blood, sharp teeth, pointed ears, a long, thin tail with a heart-shaped tip, and a tiny pair of green wings. Her eyes are also green, with cat-like pupils. Her dragon genetics make her technically agender, and while she has a flat chest, she identifies as vaguely female.

As a child, Sage wears just a white tank-top and some shorts. As she interacts more with humans, she wears a gray jacket to hide her draconic features, along with black boots and blue jeans. Later on, she wears a copper necklace with a green pendant, which she gains as part of her membership with the Silver Daggers.

Personality

Sage is known for being extremely curious. If she hears a word she doesn’t know, she’ll ask for a definition. She does lose most of her curiosity for anxiety as she spends more time around humans. She’s easily distracted, particularly by shiny objects and fruit. She has a bit of a rebellious streak, often doing things just because she was told not to. She's known for putting things in her mouth to investigate them, or when her hands are full. She loves to talk, even when no one is listening. This makes it less noticable when she starts developing hallucinations and talking to those. Sage can come off as naive or childish, but she's not a complete idiot. Sometimes.

Abilities

Sage is agile, a good climber, and an experienced hunter. These skills get refined during her time with the Silver Daggers to make her an incredible thief and mercenary.

Sage inhereted her mother's green fire breath, though hers is entirely illusionary. This fire is cool to the touch and will only stick around for a few minutes. She eventually loses this ability from disuse and her disease shortly before her death. As a dragon, she is fire resistant, mostly in the places she has scales, and cold-blooded. She also has a powerful jaw. Sage does bite and she'll take off fingers.

She can't read. Seth's tried to teach her but she is physically incapable of learning written text.

History

Early Life

Sage was born from a dragon mother, deep within a forest. She never knew her father, and her mother refused to speak about him, other than the fact he was a human. Mother is strongly against Sage associating with humans, but she has a hard time fitting in in the forest with how human she looks. When Sage runs into Seth, when they're like 9, they're both deeply curious about the other. They become friends, with Seth sneaking out into the forest to see her and teach her about human stuff. Sometimes, Seth even sneaks her into his town, so she can see all the human stuff for herself.

When Seth gets accepted to the university and has to move to the city, Sage is determined to come with him, to experience the world. He's reluctant, knowing Sage would have a hard time so far from the forest, but eventually relents.

City Life

Seth has an apartment in the city, courtesy of the university, but quickly bans Sage from living with him. He's nervous about her getting discovered, and recommends she finds her own place somewhere less busy. Sage makes a habit of sleeping on the beach, where the heat of the sand can help her through the cold nights.

Sage is quickly noticed by the Silver Daggers, a crime group made of exclusively creatures. They're Sage's only option for making money without risking getting discovered, so she agrees to work for them. She didn't know entirely what she was getting into at the time, but she learns quickly.

Spirit Rot and Death

About a year before her death, Sage is approached by a shady group of magic-users, known simply as the coven. They invite her to an "event" that ends with Sage drinking a strange fluid and passing out. She meets Azzy in her sleep and wakes up with his mark, an omega symbol, on her wrist. From then on, Sage displays symptoms like coughing , fatigue, extreme emotions, and hearing things (mostly Azzy). These symptoms get worse with physical or emotional stress, and progressively get worse over the course of the year. All of her dreams turn to nightmares, mostly of herself or Seth dying. Her relationships with the Silver Daggers fall apart, and even her friendship with Seth gets tested.

The night before her death, Sage and Seth get into a fight, airing out a lot of feelings. The next day, Seth comes to her to apologize, and the two make up. Shortly thereafter, Seth is shot and killed in the middle of the street. Sage attempts to fight the attacker, recieving multiple gunshot wounds, and dies from bloodloss.

Relationships

Seth

Aaron

Aaron is the leader of the Silver Daggers and Sage's boss. Sage comes to think of him as a guardian, though this affection is not at all reciprocated.

Coda

Coda is another member of the Silver Daggers, and the one who actually cares about her and teaches her. Sage is very bad at picking up on creepy vibes, which is good in this case, because Coda is actually a sweetheart under all those scars.

Trailer

Another Silver Daggers member, and one of Sage's best friends. As an ex-human, Trailer is able to help Sage with blending in, when his memory cooperates with him.

Azzy

Trivia

• I got the name "Sage" from the book The False Prince^↗.

• Originally, Sage had a full-dragon brother named Boo. He filled a similar role to Seth for her early life and was also purple, so he got fully replaced by Seth at some point.

• Sage's spirit rot was directly inspired by the time I had pneumonia. I had such an awful time that I had to inflict it on one of my characters.
