Hymn for a Scarecrow

Backstory for a D&D character, Pat the scarecrow. I did actually draw ~30 seconds of this at some point. I'll embed that here too.

.

You hang around for a living

Farmer places a normal scarecrow in a field.

Somewhere between all the land and the sky

The field sways in the wind, there's a small town visible in the background.

Being by never forgiving

being in a field, scarecrow stuff

Nobody knows you and neither do I

 Close-up.

(instrumental)

Farther away, watching a path along a fence as a mysterious stranger walks past. With each measure, more crows show up, along the fence and atop the scarecrow. By the last frame, the sky is dark with smoke, and the crows have knocked the scarecrow over.

.

Birds may believe at a distance

Scarecrow on the ground, covered in crows.

You wear a grin and keep perfectly still

One pecks at its face. No response.

Driven away with persistence

A shadow moves over the scarecrow, the birds spook, some flying away.

I wonder if they have wondered or will ever wonder

It's the crow warlock. She crouches down to inspect the scarecrow, smiling. She has an idea.

Ever wonder

.

Farmer Jim hums when he's all alone

A farmer, doing farm stuff in a barn.

He may imagine you heard and he knew

Farmer hears something and turns around, and is spooked.

You wouldn't hear what he might have known

The Scarecrow, alive, expression blank. He stands in the doorway, ominously.

I wonder whether he wonders if you ever wonder

Close-up on Scarecrow, the Warlock behind him. He looks down at his hand.

Ever wonder

Hand catches fire. (the scarecrow has fire magic btw, his hands just do that)

.

Oh, scarecrow

Scarecrow, standing blankly in front of a barn. It's burning.

Maybe the wind knows

Wind blows his hair. Smoke and embers.

Whether you wonder

Watching it burn. Light flickering across his eyes.

Who's calling your name

 Looks back, someone's calling

Scarecrow

 The Warlock, in the distance

Maybe the wind knows

She motions for him to follow. And turns to leave

Whether you wonder

He follows, no questions asked. But like a hint of a thought is there.

If you are to blame

They walk away from the burning town. Moving on to the next.

(instrumental)

Montage of burning stuff. Follow smoke up, transitions to a campfire.

.

Mother Earth's love whispered to me (and it wasn't her fault)

The Warlock has set up camp for the night. The Scarecrow keeps watch over the fire.

Real is a feeling and feeling is real

He sits, usual blank expression, looks up at the moon.

All of you are flowing through me

Uh oh, he is having thoughts. And feelings.

But you wouldn't know how to fathom or feel

He looks back down, being contemplative. Crow jumpscare.

When the wind blows

The crows are looking at him with their blank eyes. He tries to play it off. He's not having thoughts, who's having thoughts, he's just a scarecrow.

The wind knows

The crows back off. He is having thoughts tho...

The wind knows

Looking at the fire, quick transition to a burning town again.

.

Oh, scarecrow

Standing in a burning barn again, with emotions this time.

Maybe the wind knows

 There is a child, scared.

Whether you wonder

Scarecrow is experiencing doubt. He wants to help.

Who's calling your name

Looks back, checking for the Warlock. Coast is clear.

Shame how nobody knows you

Scarecrow carrying the child away from the town, it's hard he's small.

Only who wonders if you are to blame

Watches the child run off. Looks back at the burning town. Yeah maybe this is bad actually.

.

Saving the grain of your golden domain

The Scarecrow is having a realization at the edge of a field.

Without even reasoning why

 Looking at his hands.

The crows seem to know where you need them to go

There are crows, along the fence, watching.

Igniting a spark in their minds, so they circle and fly

Scarecrow is tired of getting watched, and throws fire at the birds, frustrated. Birds take to the sky, surprised.

Fly, fly, fly

More birds in the area take flight. Oh man thats a lot of crows. Also the fence/field catches fire a bit. He immediately regrets this decision.

Fly, fly, fly, fly

He looks back towards the village. The Warlock is there. She knows. He takes off running into the woods.

Fly, fly, fly, fly

Scary fast-paced shots, running through undergrowth, stuff snagging on his fabric. The trees are full of crows, shadows full of eyes. The Warlock isn't following, just watching him, getting further away.

Fly, fly, fly, fly

Build up continues, darker, less comprehensible, more abstract. On the last "fly", he trips, tumbles out of the forest as the music crashes, lands face-down in a crossroad as the music ends.

.

You hang around for a living

 Pat slowly picks himself up.

Blown in the wind like a pinned butterfly

Looks around, hat is getting blown away slightly.

Monarch of ever forgiving

Picks up hat, looking at it.

Some of us wonder if you want to die

 At his hands.

Would you want to die?

Sad, scared, tired, but decides to keep going. Puts his hat back on.

How I wonder, ever wonder

Keeps walking down the path, off into the distance.

Ever wonder, ever wonder (etc)

Camera stays on crossroad. Crows land on the trees and signpost, watching him leave. The end.

.

Go back?
